FIRE Calculator

Estimate the portfolio you'd need to cover your spending and how long it might take to get there.

How it works

Your FIRE number is annual spending divided by your chosen withdrawal rate.

Your portfolio grows each year at the real (after-inflation) return, with your annual savings added at year end.

Because the real return is used, all figures are in today's dollars.

Formula & methodology

FIRE number = Annual spending ÷ withdrawal rate
Real return
(1 + return) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1
Savings rate
Annual savings ÷ annual income

The withdrawal rate is an assumption, not a guarantee that savings will last.

Illustrative example

$45,000 spending at a 4% withdrawal rate

The FIRE number is $1,125,000.

Starting with $50,000 and saving $30,000 a year at a 7% return and 2.5% inflation, the results show the estimated years to reach it.

Hypothetical figures for illustration only.
