Retirement Calculator

Project how much you may have saved by retirement, the monthly income those savings might support, and how that compares with the income you want.

How it works

Enter your age, target retirement age, current savings, monthly contribution, an expected return, an inflation assumption and the monthly income you'd like in today's dollars.

Savings are grown monthly until retirement. Estimated income uses a 4% annual withdrawal assumption, a common planning rule of thumb, and is also shown in today's dollars.

These are estimates based on the assumptions entered and are not guaranteed.

Formula & methodology

Monthly income ≈ Savings at retirement × 4% ÷ 12

Real income
Monthly income ÷ (1 + inflation)^years

Savings needed = desired monthly income × 12 × (1 + inflation)^years ÷ 4%.

Social Security, pensions, taxes and investment fees are not included.

Illustrative example

Age 35, retiring at 65

With $40,000 saved, $600 a month, a 6% return and 2.5% inflation, projected savings are about $843,600.

A 4% withdrawal suggests about $2,812 a month, or roughly $1,341 in today's dollars.
