Investment Calculator

Estimate what your investments could be worth in the future, and what that amount might feel like in today's dollars after inflation.

How it works

Enter your starting balance, monthly contribution, an expected annual return, the number of years and an assumed inflation rate.

The calculator grows the balance monthly using the expected return, then divides by cumulative inflation to estimate the value in today's purchasing power.

All projected values are estimates. Investment returns are not guaranteed and can be negative.

Formula & methodology

FV = P(1 + i)^n + C × ((1 + i)^n − 1) / i       Real value = FV / (1 + inflation)^years
P
Initial investment
C
Monthly contribution
i
Monthly return (annual return ÷ 12)
n
Number of months

Contributions are added at the end of each month.

Taxes, account fees and fund expense ratios are not included and would reduce results.

Illustrative example

$5,000 start, $300 a month for 25 years

Assuming a 6% annual return, total contributions are $95,000 and the projected value is about $230,000.

With 2.5% annual inflation, that is roughly $124,000 in today's dollars.

Hypothetical figures for illustration only.
