Inflation Calculator

See how a steady inflation rate changes prices and the purchasing power of a dollar amount — looking forward or back in time.

How it works

Choose “future” to see what something costing a given amount today might cost later, or “past” to estimate what today's amount would have been equivalent to years ago.

You enter the assumed average annual inflation rate. The calculator does not use official historical data, so results are estimates.

Formula & methodology

Future cost = Amount × (1 + i)^years Purchasing power = Amount ÷ (1 + i)^years
i
Assumed annual inflation rate
years
Number of years

Past value uses the same factor in reverse: Amount ÷ (1 + i)^years.

Actual inflation varies year to year and by category of spending.

Illustrative example

$1,000 over 10 years at 3%

Something costing $1,000 today would cost about $1,343.92 in 10 years.

Conversely, $1,000 in 10 years would buy what about $744.09 buys today.

Hypothetical figures for illustration only.
