Forex Calculator: Pip Value, Margin & Profit Explained

A forex calculator turns trade details — pair, lot size, leverage and pips — into dollars, so you know your risk before you click buy or sell. Most traders use three: a pip value calculator, a margin calculator and a profit/loss calculator. This guide explains each forex calculator in plain words with EUR/USD examples. Start with the [Pip Calculator](/forex/pip-calculator).

What a forex calculator does

Forex prices move in tiny steps called pips. A forex calculator converts those pips into money in your account currency and shows how much margin a trade ties up. It answers three questions:

  • Pip value: how much one pip is worth for your trade size.
  • Margin: how much of your account the broker sets aside to open the trade.
  • Profit and loss: how much you make or lose for a given pip move.

Pip value with a forex calculator

For pairs quoted in US dollars, like EUR/USD, one pip is 0.0001. Pip value = pip size × trade size. A standard lot is 100,000 units, so 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10 per pip.

Pip values differ for pairs not quoted in USD and for JPY pairs.
Lot typeUnitsPip value (EUR/USD, USD account)

Margin with a forex calculator

Margin = Position size (in account currency) ÷ Leverage

Opening a $100,000 position at 100:1 leverage requires $100,000 ÷ 100 = $1,000 of margin. Higher leverage lowers the margin but does not lower the risk — each pip is still worth $10.

Example only. Your broker and local rules set the leverage available to you.
LeverageMargin for $100,000 position
10:1$10,000
30:1$3,333
50:1$2,000
100:1$1,000

Profit and loss example

Worked example

50-pip win on 1 mini lot

  1. Pair: EUR/USD, buy 1 mini lot (10,000 units)
  2. Pip value: $1
  3. Price moves up 50 pips
  4. Profit: 50 × $1 = $50 (before spread and fees)

A 50-pip loss on the same trade would cost about $50.

Spreads, commissions and overnight swap fees reduce real results. Prices in these examples are illustrative, not live quotes.
