Pips & Lots

Forex Lot Size Explained: Standard, Mini, Micro & Position Size

Forex trade size is usually expressed in lots. A lot is a fixed number of units of the base currency, and the lot size you trade determines how much each pip is worth.

Lot types

Lot typeUnitsLotsPip value (EUR/USD, USD account)
Standard100,0001.00$10.00
Mini10,0000.10$1.00
Micro1,0000.01$0.10

Many platforms let you trade any size in 0.01-lot steps, so 0.37 lots (37,000 units) is common. Some brokers also offer nano lots of 100 units.

Lot size and position size

Lots describe how many units you buy or sell. The position's value in the quote currency is units × price — 1 standard lot of EUR/USD at an example 1.0850 is a position of about $108,500.

How lot size affects P&L

P&L = Pips gained or lost × Pip value per lot × Number of lots

Worked example

0.3 lots of EUR/USD moving 25 pips

  1. Pip value per standard lot = $10
  2. 0.3 lots → $3 per pip
  3. 25 pips × $3 = $75

The same 25-pip move would be $250 at 1 lot or $2.50 at 0.01 lots.

Choosing lot size from risk

Working backwards, you can find the lot size that keeps a stop-loss within a risk amount you choose:

Lots = Risk amount ÷ (Stop distance in pips × Pip value per lot)
