What Is a Pip in Forex? Pips Explained With Examples
A pip is the standard unit for measuring how much a currency pair's price has moved. Traders use pips to describe moves, stop distances and spreads, then convert pips into money with a pip value.

Standard pip convention
For most pairs, such as EUR/USD or GBP/USD, prices are quoted to four decimal places and one pip is the fourth decimal: 0.0001. If EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0875, it has moved 25 pips.
JPY pairs
Pairs with the Japanese yen as the quote currency, such as USD/JPY or EUR/JPY, are quoted to two decimal places, and one pip is 0.01. A move from 150.00 to 150.45 is 45 pips.
Pipettes
Many brokers show an extra decimal — a fifth decimal on most pairs, a third on JPY pairs. That fractional pip is a pipette, worth one tenth of a pip. A quote of 1.08503 includes 3 pipettes beyond 1.0850.
Pip value
Pip value (quote currency) = Pip size × Units Pip value (account currency) = Pip value (quote) × Conversion rate
- Pip size
- 0.0001, or 0.01 for JPY pairs
- Units
- Trade size; 1 standard lot = 100,000 units
- Conversion rate
- Quote currency → account currency, if they differ
Examples
Worked example
EUR/USD, 1 standard lot, USD account
- Pip value = 0.0001 × 100,000 = 10 USD
Each pip is worth $10, regardless of the EUR/USD price.
Worked example
USD/JPY, 1 standard lot, USD account, example price 150.00
- Pip value in yen = 0.01 × 100,000 = 1,000 JPY
- Convert to USD: 1,000 ÷ 150.00 ≈ $6.67
Because the quote currency is yen, the dollar pip value changes as USD/JPY moves.
| Pair | Pip size | Pip value per standard lot |
|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD | 0.0001 | $10 (USD account) |
| GBP/USD | 0.0001 | $10 (USD account) |
| USD/JPY | 0.01 | 1,000 JPY ≈ $6.67 at 150.00 |
| USD/CHF | 0.0001 | 10 CHF, converted at your USD/CHF rate |
