Start with gross income: your total yearly pay before anything is taken out.
Subtract pre-tax deductions: money you put into a traditional 401(k), IRA or HSA is not taxed now.
Subtract the 2025 standard deduction: $15,750 for single filers or $31,500 for married couples filing jointly. What is left is your taxable income.
Apply the 2025 federal brackets: each slice of taxable income is taxed at its own rate, from 10% up to 37%. Adding the slices gives your federal income tax.
Estimate take-home pay: the calculator also subtracts FICA (6.2% Social Security up to $176,100 and 1.45% Medicare) to give a monthly figure before state tax.

Taxable income = Gross income − Pre-tax deductions − Standard deduction
Only the income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate — moving into a higher bracket never makes your whole income taxed at the higher rate.
Tax credits, itemized deductions and state or local taxes are not included.
Illustrative example
Gross income: $80,000. Pre-tax deductions: $0. Standard deduction: −$15,750. Taxable income: $64,250.
10% on the first $11,925 = $1,192.50.
12% on $11,926 to $48,475 ($36,550) = $4,386.00.
22% on $48,476 to $64,250 ($15,775) = $3,470.50.
Total federal income tax: $9,049. Marginal bracket: 22%. Effective rate: $9,049 ÷ $80,000 = 11.31%.
After $6,120 of FICA, estimated take-home before state tax is about $64,831 a year, or $5,403 a month.
